Chelsea – February Update

Roman Abrahmovich – Chelsea Owner

As of February 2, 2011 Chelsea currently sits in fourth place in the England Premier League behind Manchester, Arsenal, and Manchester City, and ahead of Tottenham Hotspurs and Liverpool. They most recently defeated Sunderland 2-4 in a Premiership match. Their next Premier League match is against Liverpool on February 6th.

In the last hours of the winter transfer window, Chelsea was successful in their move to add Fernando Torres and David Luiz to their squad. Torres will play his debut match for Chelsea against Liverpool on February 6th – hoping to score at least one goal against his former club.

In the January transfer window, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich made a lavish £76.5m outlay on Fernando Torres and David Luiz in an attempt to move up the Premier League ladder, despite the Russian owner claiming to support UEFA’s policy of financial fair play.

Since 1994–95, only three clubs have won the Premier League title – Manchester United (nine of the club’s eleven titles), Arsenal and Chelsea (three times each). Manchester United have not finished outside the top three since the formation of the Premier League. From the 1996–97 season onwards, the “Big Four” (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United) have dominated the top four spots, and thus places in the UEFA Champions League. This year the “Big Four” teams at the top are challenged by heavily funded Manchester City and the Spurs.

Chelsea are in Champions League Group F with 15 points to date.

FA Cup holders Chelsea defeated Everton in a FA Cup fourth round replay, and will next play Reading.
