Chelsea Wins 4-1 Against Zilina in Champions League Debut

Chelsea earns easy win against Zilina in their season Champions League debut in Slovakia.

Chelsea overpowered Zilina in their Champions League opener Wednesday as the English champions gave themselves the advantage of a 4-1 win.

With a perfect start to the England Premier League season under their belt, Chelsea easily gained a 3-0 lead after just 28 minutes against tournament newcomer Zilina. Michael Essien opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game, Anelka scored two goals within four minutes of each other, and Daniel Sturridge added another in the second half. Tomas Oravec scored a consolation goal for Zilina in the 55th.

Previously Chelsea sent a serious warning to their title rivals after they thrashed Wigan Athletic with a spectacular 6-0 score.

Ancelotti started three strikers, Daniel Sturridge, Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda.

“In front, we played very well,” said Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti. “We had a lot of opportunities.”

Chelsea won in spite of the loss of Didier Drogba, who was suspended for two games by UEFA after receiving a red card in a 1-0 loss to Inter Milan in the Champions League in March.
